Proposed $295m Egypt Tire Plant Could Create Future Carbon Black Demand

European Rubber Journal reported on November 2 that China’s Jiangsu General Science plans a tire plant in Egypt’s Sokhna industrial zone. The proposed investment is up to $295 million, with designed annual capacity totaling 6.8 million tires. It is a relevant potential downstream development for carbon black suppliers, though it remains a planned project.

The proposed mix is 6 million semi-steel radial passenger tires and 800,000 all-steel truck and bus tires per year. The project draws on a company filing dated October 30. Construction is estimated at 36 months, but no start date was specified. If completed, Egypt would become the producer’s third overseas production base after Thailand and Cambodia.

Board approval does not equal an operating plant. The project still requires regulatory approvals in China and Egypt. Its design capacity is neither actual tire output nor a confirmed purchase order for carbon black or other raw materials.

Reinforcing carbon black is used in many tire compounds. If the plant begins operation and scales as planned, suppliers of application-qualified grades could see a future opportunity. It would be misleading to calculate a firm tonnage of demand from tire counts alone: compound recipes, utilization, sourcing strategy and start-up timing are all unknown.

For a related industrial grade, see Gohar Farayand’s N550 carbon black page. This product link does not indicate any supplier relationship with the proposed factory or suitability for every tire component. A compound-specific technical evaluation remains essential.

Analysis

The project could eventually shift regional procurement patterns and create a new addressable market. Permits, start date, utilization and future suppliers remain unresolved, so planned capacity must be kept separate from realized demand.
