Oil slips after yesterday’s rise: what carbon black buyers should watch

Reuters reported on October 29 that crude gave back part of Wednesday’s rise. Brent was down 0.7% at $114.47 a barrel at 07:20 GMT, while WTI was down 1.1% at $101.65. These are intraday readings, not closing prices. Hopes for diplomacy competed with concerns about possible Middle East supply disruption.

Connecting oil moves to a carbon black quotation

The previous day’s EIA data, also covered by Reuters, showed US crude inventories falling by 1.9 million barrels for the week ended October 23. Distillate stocks fell while gasoline stocks rose. Such mixed energy data cannot be converted directly into a carbon black selling-price change.

Industrial carbon black costs can be affected, depending on region and process, by aromatic refinery streams or coal-tar feedstock as well as power and transport. Feedstock contracts and inventory determine how quickly a move passes through. Freight and exchange rates can move independently of crude, so the delivered price for each grade and destination requires its own quotation.

For N330 purchases, compare technical specifications, Incoterm, packaging, quote validity, payment terms and order volume, rather than looking only at the oil chart. Black pigment for coatings and plastics additionally needs performance testing in the actual formula.

Analysis

The daily reversal argues for scenarios in feedstock and transport budgeting. It does not establish today’s carbon black price, a definite N330 price change or the future direction of the market.
